Buy from Small Business, Make a Big Impact

Big Fun Toy Store

July 3 marks the beginning of Buy Local Week, sponsored by the Council of Smaller Enterprises (COSE). It emphasizes the importance of buying from independently-owned businesses. COSE backs this initiative in an effort to keep dollars in Northeast Ohio and support the common businessperson. Running through July 10, participants can pledge to redirect $100 of their normal spending to local businesses and receive a discount card valid at more than 40 businesses. Of these local businesses, 19 of them are Positively Cleveland members. (FYI, in hospitality/tourism, the majority of businesses are small businesses.)

Not only does buying local preserve innovation, diversity, pride, local job growth and entrepreneurship, but every dollar spent in a locally-owned business also goes further than a big box counterpart. Specifically, 45 cents of every dollar spent in a local business stays in the community compared to just 14 cents for a chain. Studies have also shown that local businesses use city services more efficiently, thus conserving tax dollars.

Take the pledge at here.

COSE makes it easy to find local businesses by providing a comprehensive business database at www.ibuyneo.com. Supporters can also check out the ibuyneo.com Facebook widget or install the widget to their page or blog to share with friends. This widget shares more than 100 ideas on how to buy local. – Submitted by Matt Labuda, Marketing Intern
